Salford University Appoints New Pro-Vice-Chancellor
Former Regional Director of Government Office North West (GONW), Keith Barnes has been appointed as the University of Salford’s Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships and Development).
Former Regional Director of Government Office North West (GONW), Keith Barnes has been appointed as the University of Salford’s Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Partnerships and Development).
Reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the new role will involve developing and maintaining the University’s external partnerships – including Salford City Council, city region and regional agencies and international organisations.
As Regional Director of the GONW, Keith acted as an advocate for the region in Whitehall. At the same time he worked in the region with a wide range of partners to successfully implement a range of economic, environmental and social policies on the ground.
He said: “I am delighted to be joining the University of Salford at such an exciting time. Salford has a rich tradition of working with businesses and community in the region. Salford’s investment in the digital sector with MediaCityUK and in the development of its campus demonstrate to me that this is a University with a significant future.”
Prior to his role with the GONW, Keith was Chief Executive of Thurrock Council, Essex, where he oversaw an ambitious regeneration programme. Under Keith’s leadership Thurrock transformed itself to become a unitary council. He was also Chairman of Manchester Airport at a time when the organisation was expanding rapidly and became a plc owned by the Greater Manchester Councils.
In his most recent role as a consultant, he provided advice and executive coaching to clients in local government, health and voluntary sectors. He also chairs the Groundwork Trust (MSTT) and is a board member on Harvest Housing.
Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Martin Hall, said: “Keith will be a huge asset to the University. His experience working with government ministers and officials at the highest level, together with his excellent people management skills, make him a valuable member of the University’s senior team.”
